When it comes to spring and summer clothing, we’re often encouraged to ditch dark colours in favour of pastels, bold prints and bright colours.

But what if you’re just not into these type of brash colours and bold statements? We’ve been labouring under the misconception that wearing dark colours in the hotter months will make us overheat, while white will keep us cool. However, according to an article in Gizmodo, ‘basic physics’ suggest that black clothing can actually help us stay cool, as it radiates body heat instead of reflecting it back. There are also the practical benefits of avoiding those pesky grass stains or bug invasions.

So how can you best wear darker clothing in the lighter months?

Keep it airy

Lightweight fabrics and loose designs are a perfect way to keep cool, regardless of the colour you’re wearing. A swishy navy maxi dress could be a wardrobe staple this summer – cool, practical, effortlessly stylish and easy to dress up or down, a dark maxi dress can be suitable for anything from a day in the park to a summer wedding.

A pop of colour

A bold red lip, a bright belt or even a pair of wacky shades can be a great way to add a hint of colour and summer flair to an otherwise serious-looking outfit. Accessories like these are generally inexpensive and can be worn with a variety of outfits throughout the summer. They can provide a cute focal point and a break from the blackness…even for those who are dedicated to the dark side.

Show some skin

A short hem or bare midriff isn’t just a great way to keep cool and top up your tan, but it also breaks up a dark outfit. Think crop tops and mini skirts as a great way to combine summer weather with darker clothing.

Stripes

A lightweight striped top is a great way to get a little white into your navy and black ensemble. The pattern is timeless, flattering and versatile. A navy maxi dress with a striped effect can be a perfect way to demonstrate the look.

Textures

If you’re heading to a festival this summer, then a black crochet cardigan can be a perfect, practical look. It also allows the skin to breathe and will look fab alongside leather and a t-shirt.
